On the hunt! ...for Sight Words!

Hi all!
Last week I went to a training for my new literacy curriculum and heard a great idea for a sight word activity! I'm always "hunting" for ways to get students engaged with sight words, and I have seen how important it is to develop fluency with those tricky can't-sound-them-out words, so I created these Sight Word Sentence Hunts!

In partnerships, students get one sentence strip and one highlighter pen (about the coolest thing for a 5 year old, second only to stickers). Together, they find the sight word of the week! This allows students to develop their sight word fluency in context. As the year goes on, this can be both an activity to practice new sight words, as well as reviewing previously taught words. And as an extension, students could even glue the sentence into their literacy notebooks and draw picture representing the sentence. Sight words, fluency, comprehension, oh my!
And for a literacy center, I was thinking of laminating some sentences and having dry erase markers for students to do the same thing, but with the independence of choosing new sentences. Or even finding multiple words in each sentence!
I've used my school's progression of sight words to build the sentences, with increasing sight words over time. I've also included some text feature highlights so that students can have a chance to name and practice reading elements like commas and quotations in context.
At the very end of the sentences, I've included a set of sight word cards, including some tense variations (ex. go, goes, going). Hopefully that makes implementation a bit easier!

I hope these are helpful in your literacy block!
Teach on!
